Relying on Spielberg's TV experience and extensive "storyboarding, " the elaborate action film was shot in 73 days in France, Tunisia, Hawaii, and the famed Elstree Studios in England, which Lucas also used for his films. Special effects for the film were made at Industrial Light and Magic, Lucasfilms' own facility in northern California. Spielberg used English cinematographer Douglas Slocombe, who worked on his Close Encounters, and editor Michael Kahn, who edited Close Encounters and 1941.

In addition to the regular principal pirates, including the captain and the African lookout, there is a teenaged rookie pirate whose sole purpose in the film is to have his comrades explain their phobia of Gauls, as well as make inane comments whenever their ship is sunk (instead of the old peg-legged pirate as in the comics).

This is much, much darker and seems to show a more serious side to Jackie's acting. A capsule holding all those fantasized, clichéd music videos -- e. g. screaming in the rain while our song reaches its final chorus, a la Simple Plan circa 2003, etc. etc. Like a reenacment of the dreams of Debussy, but in broad daylight, kites and rainbow in place of Clair de Lune.
