Personally I have been stress eating after dinner 1-2 times per week for the past month (a combination of the change in seasons, work stress and the environmental stresses of politics and pandemics... ) and haven't been logging those episodes all that well. I have managed to limit those excursions from my maintenance plan to those days where I have gone on a long run and have 1500-2000 kcal remaining for the day so any potential damage is minimal. Even though I probably had 600 kcal of Halloween candy on Halloween and Election nights, I was probably only 200 kcal over on the day. I'm just worried about it becoming a more regular occurrence. Once a month doesn't bother me at all, but 1-2 times a week for the past 4-6 is more of a concern. Even though I'm still fine, maintaining near the low end of my 10 lb window and keeping up my activity levels working slowly towards running a half-marathon before 2020 is up. The solo viola in the concerto is a protagonist he understands, using the space cleared by a big orchestra to linger on an intimate soliloquy that is by turns rhapsodic, indignant, and pensive. If only the title character in the opera were half as insightful or introspective. In all three of his operas, Dark Sisters, Two Boys, and now Marnie, Muhly grapples with the genre's dramatic demands, but he doesn't struggle hard enough. His idol, Philip Glass, stretches out the dramatic pacing so far that it practically liquefies. Muhly doesn't put up that kind of resistance, adapting instead to traditional theatrical structure without obvious enthusiasm. On opening night, I kept hoping he would dam up the flow of plot and words and let his ideas bloom. Instead, it often felt like he was grudgingly supplying the soundtrack for someone else's show. People also seem to act without reason all throughout the film. There's one scene where Stephen ends up on the phone with Carol. He decides to end the call early, and subsequently throws his phone as far as possible. Why? To show that's mad? We've already gotten that from the way he was speaking to his wife-to-be, so there is no purpose in chucking your phone. Plus, he's definitely going to regret that action later, whether or not the film wants to address that (it doesn't). I suppose I just don't understand the purpose of this particular film. If it was trying to get us to not be prejudiced, then why would it have its characters switch back and forth on the issue themselves? If it wanted to entertain, then it would have actually had a plot to follow or characters to care about. And if it wanted to make sense, it could have with some consistency added into the mixture. Surely they weren't that starved for money or attention. Given the promotion (or the lack thereof), I don't think that they got either from this movie.
