L'histoire de Danish Girl est revendiquée comme étant celle du premier homme, le danois Einar Wegener, ayant jamais subi une opération de changement de sexe, en 1930. En vérité, il s'agit de l'un des premiers, car il y eut, selon les sources, un contemporain voire un précédent, celui de l'Allemand Dörchen Richter qui devint Dora Richter. Adapté d'une biographie très romancée de David Ebershoff, le scénario de Danish Girl, signé Lucinda Coxon, conserve quelques personnages imaginaires, et même certaines caractéristiques inventées pour nourrir les personnages principaux. La fiction prend donc ici souvent le pas sur la réalité, malgré le carton revendiquant le film comme «une histoire vraie». Il a fallu une quinzaine d'années pour que ce projet voie le jour, plusieurs réalisateurs s'y sont intéressés, dont Neil LaBute, Lasse Hallström et Tomas Alfredson. A partir de 2007, Nicole Kidman, qui souhaitait le produire et interpréter elle-même le rôle écrasant de Einar/Lili eut à ses côtés plusieurs actrices pressenties pour être sa partenaire dans le rôle de Gerda.

Told in a non-linear fashion, "Alone/Together" mostly focused on Tin's journey from a high-achieving Iskolar ng Bayan to a shell of her former self after one blunder derailed all her plans for the future. Tin coming clean to Raf with what really forced her to break up with him was agonizing to watch, especially since she doesn't have anyone else to blame but herself. It was a fresh take on the matter - one that is actually more rooted in reality than what the audience members are used to seeing in romantic films. The movie looks glorious with a mixture of long shots highlighting the beauty of various locations - from Diliman's Sunken Garden to the Met steps in New York.
