La directora y guionista Nancy Meyers ( What Women Want, 2000; It's Complicated, 2009) reúne en este filme los elementos suficientes para crear una comedia ligera que, a la vez de ofrecerle al espectador un buen rato de humor y entretenimiento, aborda al menos dos cuestiones dignas de reflexión en nuestra sociedad actual: por un lado el culto a la juventud y a lo nuevo, y, por otro, el culto al trabajo y al éxito económico. En este sentido, el personaje de Ben Whittaker, interpretado por De Niro con una acertada combinación de vitalismo y sabia mesura, reivindica la importancia de la experiencia de vida y de algunos valores tradicionales –no necesariamente conservadores– que el mundo de hoy –tan ávido de novedades– tiende a menospreciar considerándolos lastres anacrónicos para la modernidad. Así, Ben se convierte en una especie de figura paterna para la impetuosa pero confundida Jules –encarnada por Anne Hathaway con una actuación solvente–, cuyos padres, no por casualidad, son figuras prácticamente ausentes en la historia.
