Frankenstein (1931) Genre influence: Creature feature- Before 1975's underwater terror Jaws, before giant apes, insects, arachnids, reptiles, and Gill-men, even before other humanoid horrors like Dracula, The Wolf Man or The Mummy, Dr. Victor Frankenstein's monster arguably set the standard for non-human creatures. Despite being constructed from human parts and developing a capacity for higher thinking such as learning to read and eventually speak, the tragic revenant ultimately has more in common with a beast or feral animal than a man throughout the story. It may sound like a stretch nonetheless to compare a human-like character to giant bugs or sharks, but there is a certain man vs. nature aspect to Frankenstein as a concept (in this case, playing God) that can also be seen in future monster flicks.
