And I don't say melodrama like it's a bad thing. The world could use more of them these days as far as I'm concerned. If "Gifted" works for you as it did me, it's mostly because of the cast, but also the way the story unpeels. Chris Evans is at his most effectively Evans-y in the role of Frank, who leads a mystifyingly quasi-carefree life repairing boats and looking after extremely adorable Mary ( Mckenna Grace). On the opening day of school, he tells the little girl he's made her a "special" breakfast, and it's soon revealed he means a bowl of Special K. The two have a good bantering style as he explains to her why it's a good idea to break away from home-schooling and join grade one. "You're gonna meet kids today you can borrow money from for the rest of your life, " he tells her. As soon as Mary's on the bus, Frank's neighbor Roberta ( Octavia Spencer, playing a role she must be pretty used to by now, but which she nevertheless does not phone in, and good for her, and the movie) comes by to tell him that by insisting on sending her to public school, he's all but sealed Mary's doom.
C'est le plus gros problème de The Fall dans cet épisode, de ne pas savoir comment renouveler tout ce qui a été mis en place précédemment. Durant la première saison les choses étaient beaucoup plus claires, plus ordonnées et surtout beaucoup plus rythmées. Cette année, The Fall a l'occasion de ralentir les choses sur la psychologie (ce que j'ai aimé dans les deux premiers épisodes) afin de se concentrer sur d'autres aspects et notamment celui du thriller policier qui n'a de cesse de creuser ses indices afin de nous conduire petit à petit à la conclusion. Mais tout apparaît peut-être un peu trop facile finalement. Dans cet épisode, les choses misent en place ne sont tout simplement pas aussi bonnes que prévues et c'est l'un des plus gros problème de cet épisode de The Fall. Je me demande si finalement les changements opérés par la série dans cette saison 2 ne sont pas mauvais. Jakob Verbruggen ( London Spy) met tout cela en scène avec un certain aplomb. C'est d'ailleurs l'un des vrais atouts de cet épisode.
As someone who watches a lot of movies, I realized that I very seldom come across a movie I absolutely hate. Sure, there are plenty of movies I don't care for or dislike, there are movies that bored me, but there are only a handful of movies I despised. I think it's important to put into words why you dislike a movie, because there are always great movies we hate and terrible movies we love. I'll mention a few examples that always stick out for me (I apologize in advance, I am no film scholar, just a huge fan): "Rent" (2005) and Miscasting - I hated watching thirty- and fortysomethings dancing on tables singing about La Vie Boheme and not wanting to pay rent and having to 'sell out' to survive. This behavior is sympathetic when they're naive yet optimistic and passionate teens/twentysomethings. But this film adaptation decided to cast many of the Broadway stars who were past the age range for these roles. It's more expected to look past this in theater, but it is wildly distracting in the movie.
